INSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Language Arts/Bray

I am so proud of the recitations last Friday.  It was evident that most of the students worked very hard during the week to prepare for the Poetry Café.  I was impressed with the intriguing facts that they presented about the poets also.  Thank you, parents, for providing the snacks.  The students are always excited about the refreshments!

This week we are reading several personal narratives and personal anecdotes, identifying the characteristics of each, and writing a personal narrative.  We hope to turn the personal narrative into a Photostory that can be presented to the class.  We are also reviewing dependent clauses and complex sentence structure because several students are still confusing adjective and adverbial dependent clauses.  There is no vocabulary or DGP quiz this week, but the final exam will be administered on Friday.  Have a great week!

Language Arts

This week in Language Arts, students will review concepts that will be included on the 3rd Quarter Common Assessment.  In preparation for the exam, we will work on individual strengths and weaknesses, as well as look at each class's strengths and weaknesses.  Students will be given a study guide, and extra help will be available before and after school, as well as during the lunch period.

Due to exams on Thursday and Friday of this week, students will not have DGP or Vocabulary exercises.

Mathematics

Third, Fourth and Fifth Periods

On Monday and Tuesday, students will solve one-step equations involving positive and negative rational numbers (integers, fractions, and decimals).  Examples:  x - 3.5 = -10.98; 2.5x = 11/7; x/43 = - 5/3.  We will review for the Third Quarter Exam on Wednesday.  Exams are scheduled for Thursday and Friday

Second Period

This week, we will begin our eighth and final unit, Data Distribution.  Statistical graphs are scheduled for Monday; frequency tables and histograms are on the agenda for Tuesday.  We will review for the Third Quarter Exam on Wednesday.  Exams are scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

Life Science

Monday students will use graphing, a role play game, and an article about Easter Island to explore population dynamics.  Tuesday we will visit the JMS Wildlife Habitat and Outdoor Classroom to conduct an Ecology Scavenger hunt as a review of major ecological concepts.  We will discuss the upcoming final exams, and will be updating the ACE (Achieving CRCT Excellence) folders with various review graphic organizers.   Wednesday   We will begin our new section in the Animals and More book, Introduction to Animals.  We will use the "Pass the Kingdoms" game to review major concepts and solidify a foundation for our in-depth look at the animal kingdom.  Thursday and Friday are comprehensive exams covering ecology and major concepts from the year.  After exams, we will visit our JMS Wildlife Habitat and Outdoor Classroom to make observations about each student’s tree.

Social Studies

SS: Monday we will complete the Environmental Issues Comic Strip and present them. Tuesday we will issue a 3rd Nine week exam study guide and complete it in class. Wednesday we will go over the study guide and review for the exam. Thursday we will have the 3rd Nine week exam for 2nd and 4th periods. 2009 -2010

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The 7th grade teams of teachers would like to express how excited we are to begin this school year!  With your help and support, we can form a partnership that will result in a meaningful and successful year for your child.  One of the most important aspects of life is personal responsibility, and one of our goals is to assist your child in becoming an independent young person.  This is accomplished through communication, commitment, and caring on all our parts.

Communication

Agendas:  Each child will be issued an agenda book the first week of school.  This daily planner not only aids in organization, but also provides a way for us to communicate with you and for you to be informed of your child’s assignments.  The following are important aspects of the agenda:

Note that inside the agenda there is a pink form.  This form is the site where teachers will sign permission for a hall pass to the bathroom or locker.  Four hall passes per class per quarter are allowed.  These may also be used as late passes, though once four passes are exceeded the student is considered tardy.

Throughout the week students should record assignments daily for each class.

The 7th grade teachers provide additional ways to keep you updated.  A weekly email is sent to those parents who supply an email address on their child’s syllabus.  For your convenience, this weekly update is also available on the JMS website.

Commitment

We are committed to providing a positive, challenging, and stimulating learning environment for all students.  The following are important guidelines for encouraging success for all students:

Student Work Policy:

Make-up Work:

Students who are absent will have 3 days to complete missed assignments for full credit.  It is the student’s responsibility to obtain missed work (including notes) in each class.  Please encourage your child to talk to the teacher about missed assignments.

Unexcused Tardy Policy:  Once the allotted number of hall passes per class is used, a student entering class after the bell has rung is tardy.  See class syllabi for details.

Behavior Consequences:  The following consequences apply to students not following directions:

1st – Warning

2nd – In-class discipline (change of seat, contact home)

3rd – Silent Lunch / In-Class Suspension

4th – SAS

5th – Office Referral (“write-up”)

It is our goal to create a safe, productive learning environment for your child, and we appreciate your support of these policies.  Depending on the infraction, consequences may not follow the above progression.

Caring

Please take a moment to sign your child’s syllabi, indicating that

1.     You have read and agree to the policies set forth in the 7th grade team letter

2.     You have read the policies outlined in the agenda (student handbook portion)

3.     You have read and agree to the class syllabus

Please feel free to contact us via e-mail or contact the JMS office to schedule appointments.

Thank you for your time and support, and we eagerly await getting to know your child and helping him or her to excel in school and beyond.

Respectfully,

JMS 7th Grade Faculty
